A Tale of Two Autisms

I found the contrast between these two articles on autism in young adults to be rather striking.

One the one hand you have a tale of two young aspies who are trying to find a way to make love work in the NY Times.  While on the other you have an op-ed in the Washington Post from a mother who is gearing up to once again fight for her son and find an appropriate place for him because he cannot take care of himself.

If you ever wanted to understand why there is a large divide between the self-advocate/aspie crowd and parents whose children have autism, look at the differences between these two stories.  One the one hand you have two young adults who just need time to grow up and learn to deal with the world while on the other you have a young adult who can't live on his own.

It doesn't get much clearer than that.
